About Hampton Roads

Hampton Roads comprises the cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton and Suffolk and is officially called the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area (VA-NC MSA.) Geographically it consists of two parts, the peninsula and the Southside of Hampton Roads. Hampton Roads is also called Tidewater.

Hampton Roads, compared to other metropolitan areas is a safe place to live but traffic congestion is a growing problem. One reason for the lesser crime is the police protection which is considered very good for such a large area. There still is serious crime though and you should ensure you take precautions. Also, area police do get overwhelmed sometimes so response may be a problem.

Hampton Roads has much to offer for Navy and family members. There is Nauticus, with the battleship USS Wisconsin, the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, conveniently located on the second deck of Nauticus, the Virginia Marine Science Museum, with sharks and other aquatic animals and fishes, the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia and much more.

Hampton Roads also offers the beach, bays and rivers within easy reach and restaurants that offer many different ethnic culinary delights. The surrounding area is Navy friendly and caters to military personnel with discounts and special offers. You will feel at home in Hampton Roads and you will have plenty to do!
