The Department of Veterans Affairs defines a vet as a person who served in the active military naval, or air service, and who was discharged or released under honorable conditions. The term veteran comes from the Latin Vetus, which means “old”. Many countries offer these veterans some form of compensation, acknowledging their sacrifice in fighting for and defending their country. Veterans of the U.S. Navy have many benefits available to them from education to health, job assistance, home loans and more. These benefits are available from the U.S. and state government offices. The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs oversees many benefits and provides advice and contact information to other veterans groups. Gaining access to Navy Veterans benefits may be difficult and hard to find so patience and research is required. State benefits, if available, vary from job assistance to no benefits at all. The best place to find out if your state offers veterans benefits is to access their official website if possible. Navy DD-214Upon separation from the Navy, Sailors are given a DD Form 214 otherwise known as a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty. It is important that you ensure your veterans DD-214 is accurately. Failure to ensure accuracy may delay benefits such as education, VA loan or disability compensation you may be due. To correct your records you should fill a DD Form 149, Application for Correction of Military Records. To request a copy of your veterans form you can mail, fax or fill the online request form.
